Metals, Eco-Gold and Recycling Your Gold and Platinum

Here at Abracadabra Jewelry, we work only with recycled eco-metals.  We purchase our metal from a local refinery here in Ann Arbor.  We are very committed to doing our part to better the community and the environment.  Not only do we use recycled gold, but you can also bring us your old or unused jewelry to be melted down and transformed into a fantastic new piece.  Here is a brief description of the metals we carry or work with here at Abracadabra:

Gold

Gold

In Latin, the word for gold, "aurum", comes from the phrase "shining dawn"- and it is easy to see why! Rich and warm, gold has been a valued for its brilliant lustre throughout the ages, a fact which remains true today. At Abracadabra, gold is available in a variety of colors and karats:

Yellow Gold - 10k, 14k, 18k, 22k
The higher the karat of yellow gold, the softer and warmer-toned the jewelry will be.

White Gold - 10k, 14k, 18k
Due to the alloys used to add white to the natural warmth of gold, the higher the karat of white gold, the harder and cooler-toned the jewelry will be.  Here at Abracadabra, we use a 14 X1 white gold alloy that is higher in nickel and is the whitest and hardest form of this karat we have seen.  Using this alloy will eliminate any need for Rhodium plating.

Rose Gold - 14k and 18k
Rose gold uses a higher concentration of copper giving it a rosy pink tone.  This alloy is similar in hardness to yellow gold.

Platinum – 90 – 95% Pure

Platinum – 95%

Though there are traces of platinum in the ancient Egyptian tombs, and in the artifacts of the La Tolita tribe of South America, this extremely rare metal did not find widespread fame until the end of the 19th century -just in time to be featured in the gorgeous designs of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods.

Platinum is a soft, but very durable, hypoallergenic metal that does not wear away over time like gold or silver.  Instead, platinum will quickly develop a satin patina when worn frequently.  Due to it’s high density, Platinum pieces are 2-3 times heavier than other white metals.

Palladium – 95% Pure

Palladium – 95%

Palladium has similar characteristics to Platinum.  The Platinum family of metals are inert pure metals that do not cause allergic reactions.  The color of Palladium is a steely white that shares the same durability of Platinum. That said, it can be a tricky metal to cast and is not appropriate for certain designs, such as filigree work. Palladium is consistently lower in cost then most other white precious metals, which can be an exciting solution for a tight budget!

Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver

Sterling Silver is a soft white metal that can tarnish fairly easily when exposed to air for long periods of time. There are several alloys that use platinum, germanium and zinc delaying tarnish (and prevent several other common issues jewelers have when working with silver), this has made silver a very popular metal to use recently in the jewelry industry.  However, due to it’s extreme softness it is not the best choice for stone setting when long term, daily wear is desired.

Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide is a very dense hypoallergenic alloy of equal parts tungsten and carbon atoms that create a scratch resistant dark gray metal.  This metal is a popular choice for people who are rough on jewelry and would like to maintain that initial finish, shine, satin or polish.  Our tungsten vendors offer a lifetime guarantee for size exchange and ring finish.  Unlike gold or platinum this metal is not cast but formed by a process of heat and pressure treated powder.

It should be noted that tungsten carbide is the specific alloy of tungsten that is virtually indestructible in the jewelry industry.  Many vendors sell a cheaper version of tungsten that is not this particular alloy and it does scratch and is a much more brittle form of the metal.  Since all forms of tungsten are not sizeable, be very careful to purchase only those offering a lifetime sizing guarantee.

Titanium

Titanium

Titanium is a low density hypoallergenic and corrosion resistant gray metal that is not cast but milled from larger pieces of titanium.  It is a very light weight option for jewelry, for those not used to wearing a ring it can be a nice choice.  This metal is also fairly resistant to physical wear and tear, which makes it ideal for those who are rough on their daily jewelry.  Abracadabra sells titanium lines that offer a lifetime sizing guarantee since it is not a sizable metal.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is a gray metal that has a fairly high resistance to wear and tear.  It can be used in many different styles of jewelry and is a nice option for the casual jewelry wearer.
